Lazio defender Alessio Romagnoli is reportedly on his way out of the club due to his broken relationship with the hierarchy.
The 30-year-old is a lifelong Biancocelesti supporter who realised his dream by signing for the Italian capital side in the summer of 2022. The centre-back was a free agent at the time after seeing out his contract with Milan, so he had interesting proposals on the table, especially after raising the Scudetto trophy as Rossoneri captain.
Nevertheless, Romagnoli decided to turn down lucrative offers to join his beloved Lazio. He signed a five-year contract with a salary of €3 million, but was promised a pay adjustment if the club reaches the Champions League. While the player did his part, helping Maurizio Sarri’s men finish second in the league in his first season at Formello, Claudio Lotito didn’t keep his word.
According to Il Corriere dello Sport, that episode caused the first crack in the relationship between the two parties, and the rift has now become irreparable, even though the club’s sporting director, Angelo Fabiani tried to mend the fences. Hence, the Roman newspaper expects the Italian to depart in the summer, even if it would be a heartfelt farewell.
As the source reveals, Romagnoli has offers from the Premier League as well as the Saudi Pro League. The defender has been delivering solid displays as of late, while also developing a knack for scoring goals, which may have earned him additional admirers. He has five goals and an assist in 38 appearances in all competitions this season.
