Jack Harrison has had a strange two seasons as an Everton loanee from Leeds United.
Since joining the Toffees from the then-relegated side in the summer of 2023, he's found himself mostly useful as a player on the pitch in terms of receiving regular minutes and starts, but his output has left a lot to be desired.
During his first loan spell, he started 25 of his 29 matches played, but managed just three goals and three assists in just over 2200 minutes played. This season has seen him earn 21 starts in 29 matches, but his goal contributions are down to one goal and no assists.
The underlying stats, according to FBref, suggest that his goal output was on part with expectations (3.6 xG and 3.4 xAG), but he's underperforming this season (3.3 xG and 3.7 xAG), making the question of what his contribution to the squad truly is.
He's certainly looked more confident since David Moyes took over as Everton manager, but it hasn't produced any further results when it comes to scoring goals. No doubt, Harrison works hard and keeps up with his defensive duties, but as an attacking player, a single goal contribution isn't enough.
And now his parent club have secured promotion back to the Premier League with two games left to play, with the only question now being whether Leeds or Burnley will end up as winners of the Championship.
Had the Whites failed to earn their way back to the top flight for the second straight season, there was a case to be made that Harrison could have worked out another loan spell with Everton or maybe even been sold at a below-market rate due to Leeds' position.
But their promotion means they can either have Harrison return to fight for a place with the Yorkshire club, be loaned to another club, or even be sold at a higher rate because of their new status. Harrison's contract with Leeds runs through 2028, so they do have a great deal of flexibility.
The likeliest outcome with Harrison always seemed like it would lead to his playing his football somewhere else in 2026. Leeds' promotion appears to have sealed that up.
