Injuries Reshape Liverpool’s Defensive Options

Trent Alexander-Arnold remains sidelined with the ankle injury sustained during the second leg against Paris Saint-Germain. The right-back, who is reportedly finalising a free summer transfer to Real Madrid, hasn’t featured since and will not return in time for this clash. According to reports, “he is said to be targeting a return to the pitch before the end of April for his final few weeks as a Liverpool player.”

Also absent are Conor Bradley and Joe Gomez, both working their way back from hamstring injuries. The latter has returned to light running drills but won’t be involved.

As a result, Jarell Quansah—versatile and maturing with every appearance—looks set to start at right-back once again. It was a difficult shift in the Carabao Cup final, but this derby presents an opportunity to show growth in a high-stakes setting.

Key Players Return Ahead of Derby

There is better news in midfield and goal. Both Alisson Becker and Ryan Gravenberch trained fully at Kirkby on Monday and are available for selection. Slot confirmed the pair are “fit to play”.

Alisson’s return is particularly significant after he suffered a concussion while on Brazil duty. Caoimhin Kelleher filled in at Wembley but will likely make way for Liverpool’s undisputed No.1. Gravenberch, meanwhile, pulled out of the Netherlands squad last week but now bolsters a midfield unit that has lacked balance in his absence.

Tyler Morton was also spotted in training after recovering from shoulder surgery, though he’s not expected to feature in the matchday squad.

Fresh Options in Attack

After the flatness on display against Newcastle, Slot may look to energise the frontline. Harvey Elliott—described as having “shaken off a knock suffered late on at Wembley”—is pushing for a start. Federico Chiesa, who combined with Elliott for Liverpool’s late goal in that match, is also a candidate for more minutes.
