Liverpool vs Everton - Preview, prediction, team news and lineups

Liverpool have won each of the last three Merseyside derbies at Anfield 2-0, with Everton's most-recent away derby win in front of supporters coming in 1999, visiting 26 times subsequently.

Liverpool vs Everton Preview

Will Liverpool move three points closer to a record-equaling 20th top division title? Since the Reds were last in league action, they've seen their hopes of not one but two pieces of silverware go up in flames. First, they were dumped out of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain on penalties before, last time out, a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Newcastle in the EFL Cup Final at Wembley.

Of course, these are both major disappointments, but this season will still be an enormous success if they're to go on and claim just a second Premier League title in 35 years. Well, this seems a mere formality, considering Arne Slot's side kick off 12 points clear of second-placed Arsenal, requiring just 16 points from their remaining nine fixtures to get over the line. Few predicted Slot would deliver glory in his first season in charge, but they could rubber stamp the title before the end of this month.

Everton meantime would love nothing more than to spoil their fierce rivals' parade, as they proved 49 nights ago in the reverse fixture. During the last-ever Merseyside derby at Goodison, James Tarkowski's stunning 96th minute equaliser, lashing into the top corner in front of the Gwladys Street End, not only salvaged a draw, it sparked wild scenes of celebration that will live on for eternity.

This is part of a nine-match unbeaten streak that David Moyes' men are enjoying, extending that sequence against West Ham last time out, with Jake O'Brien's injury time equaliser rescuring a point. The Toffees are therefore 15th, a whopping 17 points clear of danger, having appeared to be in serious trouble when Sean Dyche was sacked in early-January. Everton did win at Anfield during lockdown, but have not done so in front of supporters since the start of the new millennium. Well, even though the Blues are enjoying their longest unbeaten Premier League run for eight years, we cannot see beyond a Liverpool victory.

Liverpool vs Everton Head-to-Head Record

  1. Matches Played: 296.

Liverpool Team News

Trent Alexander-Arnold has certainly been in the news this week but, on the pitch, he remains a doubt due to the ankle injury suffered against PSG. With Conor Bradley and Joe Gomez also sidelined, as was the case at Wembley, Jarell Quansah is expected to fill-in at right-back.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Alisson suffered a concussion during Brazil's win over Colombia in Brasília, but that was 12 days ago now, so he'll be fit to start in goal. In less good news, Ryan Gravenberch is a doubt, having not featured for the Netherlands due to a knock sustained in the EFL Cup Final.

Liverpool predicted lineup vs Everton: (4-3-3): Alisson; Quansah, Konaté, van Dijk, Robertson; Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Szoboszlai; Salah, Luis Díaz, Jota.

Liverpool Player to Watch vs Everton

Mohamed Salah has scored eight times in Merseyside derbies; only Ian Rush, Dixie Dean, Sandy Young and Steven Gerrard have more. Having been on target for Egypt against Ethiopia during the international break, will Salah add to his 32 goals for the season?

Everton Team News

David Moyes remains without Orel Mangala, Dwight McNeil, Iliman Ndiaye and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, while Vitaliy Mykolenko is a doubt due to a thigh issue suffered against Belgium in Genk.

If the Ukrainian is sidelined, Ashley Young will come in at left-back while, having started against West Ham, Carlos Alcaraz will hope to keep his place in midfield, chosen over Tim Iroegbunam and Jesper Lindstrøm.

Lastly, Armando Broja has seen just 190 minutes of action in an Everton shirt due to injury, but featured in both of Albania's World Cup qualifiers, starting against Andorra in Tirana, so could he play a more prominent role during the remainder of the season?

Everton Player to Watch vs Arsenal

Only three Premier League goalkeepers have made more saves than Jordan Pickford this season, while he has a miserable record at Anfield, losing eight of ten visits, conceding 18 goals and keeping just one clean sheet.

Liverpool vs Everton Prediction

As alluded to earlier, we're forecasting a very comfortable win for Liverpool, the Reds emphatically getting back on track and ending the Toffees' unbeaten streak: Liverpool 3-0 Everton.
