As Pep Guardiola and his squad prepare for tomorrow’s FA quarter-final against Bournemouth, it appears that the Manchester City hierarchy is busy preparing for the summer transfer window. A new report indicates that the current Premier League champions have now entered the race to sign Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Hugo Larsson. When you analyse Larsson as a player, you can see the role he could potentially play in Pep Guardiola’s squad.

First of all, Florian Plettenberg has reported via X that Manchester City have now entered the race to sign Hugo Larsson this summer. Furthermore, Plettenberg reports Larsson is reportedly keen to join Pep Guardiola’s side. It is also included in Plettenberg’s report that Eintracht Frankfurt would demand a transfer fee of at least €60 million to seek Larsson. Lastly, Plettenberg adds that Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham are amongst a host of teams that are interested in signing Hugo Larsson this summer. Plettenberg’s report can be seen below.

Hugo Larrson is a versatile midfielder who could add plenty to Manchester City’s midfield, although he isn’t yet the finished product.

Eintracht Frankfurt have had an impressive Bundesliga campaign to date. There are several reasons for that. The form of Omar Marmoush was one reason. That form saw him sign for  Manchester City during the January transfer window. Another strong player for Eintracht Frankfurt this season has been striker Hugo Ekitiké. He looks to be another player destined for a big move in the future. In midfield, Hugo Larsson has been a key player for Eintracht and it’s clear to see why a host of clubs, including Manchester City, would be interested in signing the Swedish midfielder this summer.

Larsson can play as a box-to-box midfielder or as a deep-lying playmaker in midfield. For now, at least, he seems better suited to playing as a number eight alongside a player like Rodri. He could potentially develop into a number six and one-day step in for Rodri when required. But for now, at least, he looks to be suited to playing alongside a stronger defensive midfielder.

Hugo Larsson is a tall midfielder who also has the athleticism required to one day play in the Premier League. That does stand out when he plays for Eintracht. His height would see him be well-placed to make an impact in the Premier League. Although for now, he isn’t physically strong. That should come as he matures and grows into his body. To make up for his slender build, Larsson does read the game exceptionally well and his long legs do help him break up the play. If he grows into his body he could be a midfield powerhouse for years to come.

In possession, Hugo Larsson is a quality passer. He tends to keep it simple and does link the play well. That is a standout feature of his play in the Bundesliga. Larsson isn’t the finished product as a passer either. His final ball in the final third does need some work. He isn’t a De Bruyne style of passer so to speak. Instead, Larsson keeps it simple and recycles the ball well for his team. But you sense that the Swedish midfielder does have the necessary skills to further develop into a quality player with the ball, especially in the final third. He can also get forward from midfield with his runs from deep, as the clip below demonstrates.

Summary.

It is clear to see why Manchester City would be interested in signing Hugo Larsson. At 20 years of age, he is an exciting young prospect who would improve Manchester City’s midfield. Larsson is also ready to contribute now for Pep Guardiola’s side, while also having his best years ahead of him. All told, Hugo Larsson is a quality player who would add energy to City’s ageing midfield. He is also a technically gifted player outside of his physical attributes and he could form a dangerous midfield for Manchester City alongside Nico and Rodri if City did sign him next summer.
