One of the major goals for FC Barcelona heading into the summer transfer window will be to improve the squad. While it is already a competitive team that is fighting for every title, there is always a need to improve. Fortunately, Barcelona seems to be working on that already.
For starters, reports are suggesting that the Catalan club has evaluated various positions in which they are considering the idea of bringing in reinforcements. Various full-backs, for instance, have been recently linked to the club as well, showcasing a possible inclination to pursue players in that position.
However, another position where the club seems to want to reinforce the team is the centre-forward role. For that particular position, Barcelona have reportedly been targeting Newcastle United centre-forward Alexander Isak, and he is seen as the club’s dream signing for the summer.
While he manages to check all of the boxes from a sporting perspective, the Swedish striker would not be easy to sign. That is primarily because of the transfer fee that Newcastle United will likely demand for the €100 million-rated, as per his Transfermarkt valuation, Premier League forward.
Moreover, Barcelona are not the only club interested in the services of the former Real Sociedad player. One of the interested parties just so happens to be Liverpool, and one of the club’s former players believes that the club would do anything to sign him.
Michael Owen, a former Ballon d’Or winner and player for Liverpool, recently spoke on this topic. As highlighted by Mundo Deportivo, he believes that his former side would do ‘everything possible’ to sign the 25-year-old forward if he was available:
“If Isak was available, I believe Liverpool would do everything possible to sign him, even through a swap deal.”
He further elaborated on this idea and suggested that Uruguayan forward Darwin Nunez could be used as a bargaining chip if necessary as well:
“Personally, I don’t see Darwin Núñez wearing a Liverpool shirt next season. I think there is interest in him, with one or two Premier League clubs and even some foreign teams looking at him. I don’t see Darwin as a Liverpool player next season.”
However, if there is one name on every top club’s mind when it comes to pursuing an elite striker, it is still Alexander Isak. With 25 goals and 5 assists in 33 matches this season, it is easy to see why Barcelona and other top European sides such as Liverpool are hoping to sign the player.
