Milan director Geoffrey Moncada has reiterated the club’s confidence in manager Sergio Conceicao and resurgent striker Luka Jovic. Speaking to DAZN via MilanNews, Moncada suggested the Rossoneri may keep hold of the ex-Porto boss despite a lackluster Serie A season.
In addition to staring down the barrel of their worst top-flight finish since 2014/15, Milan crashed out of the Champions League in the knockout playoff round at the hands of Feyenoord. However, Conceicao has earned the board’s trust on other fronts.
To begin with, he won the Supercoppa Italiana in January to end Milan’s three-year title drought. Furthermore, Milan trounced arch-rivals Inter 3-0 in the return leg of their Coppa Italia semi-final tie to reach the title-deciding fixture for the first time since 2018.
Lifting only their sixth-ever cup trophy would see Milan secure European qualification. More importantly, it could be Conceicao’s only saving grace. Meanwhile, Moncada insists the 19-time Italian champions are ‘happy’ with the Portuguese manager’s work at Stadio San Siro.
“We are very happy,” Moncada said. “The coach has worked hard in three months. He has brought a methodology and an important intensity to Milanello. We work well together.”
On the other hand, Jovic has recently hit the ground running. In addition to scoring in high-profile league matches against Fiorentina and Napoli, he was the architect of Milan’s remarkable win against Inter with a match-winning brace.
Jovic’s exploits could prove crucial to Milan’s effort to add to their trophy cabinet.
“We are not satisfied with the Serie A standings, we are not happy,” Moncada continued. “Winning trophies is important for us, for a club like Milan: we want to win the Coppa Italia, the only chance to get to Europe.”
