Milan Facing Risk of Racking Up Negative Records

Milan fell to Atalanta in the last matchday after two encouraging results since switching from 4-2-3-1 to 3-4-3. They have collected just 51 points after 33 games, which is their worst clip in 10 years, La Gazzetta dello Sport informs.

The Rossoneri had done worse only in 2014/2015 with Filippo Inzaghi at the helm. They finished tenth that year, while they are ninth in the present one. They have a decent cushion over Torino and Udinese, which likely ensures that they won’t drop any further in the standings.

Milan have been particularly deficient against quality competition: they have picked up just 8 points in 14 clashes with the strongest sides. In addition, they have been too lax defensively. They have secured only 4 clean sheets and have conceded 38 goals.

The Rossoneri are nine points away from fourth place and six from sixth one. Whether the seventh will grant access to a European competition will hinge on the outcome of the Coppa Italia. They have put all their eggs in that basket at this point after drawing in the first leg with Inter. Barring a stunning collapse, Bologna will await the Derby winners in the final after defeating Empoli three-nil away a few weeks ago.

The management would prefer to finish the campaign in eighth place, avoiding a very early cup round that would impact the preparation next summer.

Our Take on Milan

It has been a season from hell for them, and the stats only back it up. Taking home the Coppa Italia wouldn’t really salvage it optics-wise it even though it’d be their second trophy. After what has been going on all year long, it’d be a surprise if they triumphed.
