Roma goal-keeper Mile Svilar came out in the open to discuss his contractual situation with the capital club.
In a brand new interview with Corriere dello Sport, Svilar opened up about his willingness to stay at Roma despite rumors of a possible exit in the summer.
The 25-year-old addressed the negotiations over his next contract.
“I don’t understand the rush, I have a contract until 2027,” he told the newspaper. “There’s no need to make a fuss. It seems that this matter matters more to the media than to me.”
“Money matters but the place where you feel good and where you see a project matters more,” he added.
“Will I stay at Roma? I really hope so. I want it to be that way one hundred percent and my family wants it too. We are very happy in Rome and at Roma.”
When asked about his role, Svilar replied, “They say that the goalkeeper is a lonely man and it’s true, because the pressure is very high. You can’t make any mistakes.”
“I liked to imitate my father who had been a goalkeeper. At five years old I was already in front of little goals blocking shots.”
“Why did I leave Belgium? Certainly not for money, I would have earned more at Anderlecht. In reality I was an impatient boy. I thought that leaving could help me, on a path of growth. Ederson and Oblak, two great goalkeepers, had grown up there. I imagined I could replicate their journey.”
“In Portugal I was second and sometimes third goalkeeper. Maybe I wasn’t ready. But I had a great time in Lisbon, I made my debut in the Champions League, and I’m convinced that the experience also helped me in my move to Roma. Otherwise I would have suffered too much from the leap from my home to Italy, where people live for football. In Belgium it’s not like that.”
“I had imagined that I would not be playing right away for Roma. I have nothing against Mourinho who had his hierarchies and preferred to focus on Rui Patricio, among other things a top guy who also helped me after.”
“Then De Rossi came in. Daniele was the most important coach in my life. I will never forget what he did for me. From the first week, when he told me I wouldn’t play but that he believed in me. In seven years, no one had ever explained a technical decision to me.”
“But who knows, maybe one day we’ll work together again. I’d love to,” he added.
“I don’t think I’m the best goalkeeper in Serie A. I never think about comparisons. I think about improving myself day by day. I still have a lot to learn.”
“Did I ever think about leaving Roma? Never, I knew that sooner or later my moment would come. At Benfica I sometimes thought about changing, here no.”
On Roma-Juventus, “It’s a very important match. It will be difficult to prepare, because they recently changed coach. E. Tudor may have given the shock, as always after technical changes. It happened to us too, right?”
“We asked Ranieri to stay next season, too. With him we have achieved a great balance in our daily work. We know what we have to do. There would be no need to change again but we have to respect his choice, and it is right that he enjoys his retirement.”
