New York City FC signed midfielder Aiden O'Neill, a 26-year-old from Standard Liège in the Belgian Pro League. The Australian signed a contract to the 2028 season and provides depth to the team's midfield for the future. The signing is another important addition to NYCFC as they continue to construct a competitive roster in Major League Soccer.

Aiden O'Neill has enjoyed some top-class spells at some reasonably highly-rated clubs. Trained at Burnley in the Premier League, the midfielder developed first-class experience at elite-level tournaments in addition to consistent statistics. Now, he takes that experience to New York, hoping to further develop the sporting project of the club.

International experience and trophies on the CV

Before he made his Belgian adventure, O'Neill had made a name for himself in Australian football with Melbourne City, winning two A-League trophies. Apart from the trophies, he was also exceptional in leadership. With Standard Liège, he wore the captain's armband, an indication of the trust he earned in a foreign land.

His career professional life also includes being called up to the Australian national team as well as participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. His international exposure gives NYCFC a player profile with experience, regularity, and adaptability to other styles of play.

New York City FC sporting director David Lee had comments on the team's new recruit. According to him, O'Neill possesses the attributes that comfortably rest in the philosophy and system of the team. "We look forward to Aiden becoming a New York player," stated Lee. "Aiden is a thoughtful and dynamic midfielder with an excellent work rate, with valuable European experience and leadership gained while he was captain at Standard Liège."

Lee's comments put forward NYCFC's ambitions for a player to be able to make an off-pitch as well as on-pitch contribution. Beyond technical ability, his leadership profile and global experience are seen as vital positives to enhance the team through the MLS campaign.

City Football Group experience simplifies integration

Another significant aspect of Aiden O'Neill's transfer signing is that he is familiar with City Football Group, the company that owns New York City FC and a number of other clubs globally. O'Neill has played for Melbourne City, another club belonging to the same group, prior to his transfer to NYCFC, making it his transition easier to the playing style and culture of NYCFC.

David Lee emphasized this advantage at the player's introduction, noting the manner in which O'Neill's experience with the team previously would see him slot in easily into the team. "Aiden's playing time at Melbourne City and City Football Group also gave him an outstanding understanding of our system, game style, and high demands we have at our club," the executive further added.
