Richard Keys has been talking about the the Newcastle United victory parade celebrations at the weekend.

Saturday seeing an open top bus heading through the city centre, from St James’ Park to the Town Moor.

Where the final destination was an event at the Town Moor, with Eddie Howe and the Newcastle United players and the trophy presented to the fans.

Richard Keys declaring; “What a turnout Newcastle United had to celebrate their Carabao Cup win. Top class.”

An estimated 300,000+ Newcastle United fans turned out across the city, including at the Town Moor.

A spectacle that was indeed, top class.

Of course, whenever Richard Keys hands out praise, you always wonder what is coming next.

Any small helping of praise is so often simply a prelude to what he really wants to say, to have a go at.

This time is no exception.

Richard Keys with three Newcastle United fans in his sights…

Richard Keys via his personal blog – 31 March 2025:

“What a turnout Newcastle United had to celebrate their Carabao Cup win. Top class.

“I saw Alan Shearer front and centre again, despite the fact he had nothing to do with the success.

“I had to wonder if he still thinks ‘medals don’t buy shoppin’? That was always his excuse for turning his back on [Man] United and a trophy haul that would’ve inevitably followed had he gone to OT.

“There’s no feeling to replace that of winning – even second hand it seems.

“I’ve also seen enough of those professional Geordies Ant and Dec to last a lifetime. Tell me – where do they live on Tyneside?”

How weird can you get?

So Alan Shearer turning down Man U never had anything to do with the chance to play for the team he supports? The fact that Shearer stayed at St James’ Park as well, when it would have been so easy to walk away when United no longer looked like the competitive team/club he had joined. Richard Keys desperate to make out that Alan Shearer came to Newcastle United for some perceived financial advantage, when the reality is that for sure he would have earned at least as much with Man U.

As for Ant and Dec, what have they done to upset Richard Keys? I guess becoming the best TV presenters of the past couple of decades and more might have something to do with it. Not something anybody could ever say about Richard Keys.

You would think that Ant and Dec had only just become Newcastle United fans this month since the trophy win, not having suffered along with the rest of us decade after decade.

So Ant and Dec are somehow fake/professional Geordies according to Richard Keys because they don’t live in Newcastle? Like hundreds of thousands of other Geordies their work means it is impractical/impossible to live on Tyneside, however, they return on a regular basis and are seen at Newcastle matches home and away season after season.

What is really laughable is that Richard Keys claims to be a Coventry City fan, so why is he living in Qatar…?

Alan Shearer was class on Saturday and Ant and Dec were brilliant at what they do best, presenting from the open top bus and the doing their bit at the Town Moor, when as always, they make it look so easy.

Once Newcastle United decided what they were going to do in terms of the cup celebrations at the weekend, surely it would have been beyond weird if they HADN’T asked UK TV’s best presenters by a country mile and the Premier League era’s greatest ever goalscorer (and player in my opinion), who are all lifelong Newcastle United fans, to play leading roles in the celebrations.

Richard Keys is quite clearly desperate to make out that Shearer and Ant and Dec were trying to steal away some of the glory for themselves, when the reality is that as always, this trio of Geordies were simply doing what they could to make sure that Eddie Howe and his players absolutely got the profile and recognition that they deserved. I lost count for example of the number of interviews that Alan Shearer did, when he was so keen to strongly make the point, that Eddie and the boys had managed to do something at NUFC that he hadn’t been able to help to do, during his ten year playing career with Newcastle United.
