Serhou Guirassy: 28 goals, and now... Sell?

"“Serhou Guirassy does indeed have a release-clause in his contract … Industry sources are talking about 60 to 75 million euros.”"Patrick Berger

This is what Patrick Berger, one of the finer sources on the topic of BVB and German football all-together, reported just yesterday. The club’s highest goalscorer so far this season, and the highest goalscorer in this entire UCL season as a whole, could well be scooped after just one year - but should BVB fans want this or not?

The Saviour

During the rough days under Nuri Sahin, the side often found themselves reliant on their number 9; Someone who’d drop deep to defend, dribble a man or two to start the attack, always link-up well to keep it going and more often than not, finished the job himself. A true hero to save the day whenever needed - which was more often than we’d like to admit.

However, those days are over. Along with the new manager, structure has been brought back into the side. The defence no longer concedes every attack it faces, and the attack is no longer reliant on mindless crosses into the box. In this new Dortmund side, is that 60 or more million for Serhou Guirassy a deal worth taking?

The Alternative

Due to Guirassy’s abrupt absence several weeks ago, we actually got a small insight into what a Guirassy-less Dortmund would look like. A game, against then 3rd-place Mainz, comfortably dominated by Die Schwarzgelben. Having turned the Signal Iduna Park into a shooting gallery, Kovac’s boys won 3-1 in an improvised 3-4-1-2 formation, an improvisation so good it was allowed to go again the week after.

One more game with German wonderkids, Karim Adeyemi and Maximilian Beier as the front-2, one more demolition. 4-1 this time, though it would be another 3-1 you’d like to ignore Serhou’s contribution off the bench for the sake of the argument.

Two games. That’s all we’ve gotten to see Adeyemi and Beier together in their natural positions. Still it wouldn’t even be weird for a fan to say that they would happily have these youngsters lead the frontline for the coming decade. At 22 and 23-years-old respectively, both are extraordinarily gifted and shown great love for the club. It all sounds very nice, but we are already forgetting someone.

To make room

Three strikers worth starting. Two spots. All three are perfect fits for the system. Only two of them are younger than 24, or 28 for that matter, while the other one has a release-clause that could fill several holes in the squad. Easy decision, if you leave out the numbers the 29 year-old colleceted whilst the other 2 were still stuck on the wing.

All of this comes around to the same question; Should we want to risk sacrificing our short-term future for long-term benefit, or should we hold back our youngsters for short-term success?
