The QPR captain is heading towards extending his stay at the club
QPR are set for some positive contract news as current captain Steve Cook is in line for a new deal at Loftus Road.
This is per the report from West London Sport, who reported that a new contract should be in the works for Cook, who turns 34 on Saturday, now that Championship survival is all but secured.
It's a move which EFL pundit Don Goodman described as "priceless" in an exclusive interview with Football League World, due to him being "one of the very, very few old-school leaders left in the game."
And Don Goodman isn't the only person who feels that Cook is an important part of the current setup at QPR, as his importance to his current club is reflected through him being the highest earner at Loftus Road.
According to Capology, Cook has earned an estimated £30,000 per week across his current two-year contract, which is set to expire at the end of the current season.
This is double the second-highest earner at QPR this season, with Ronnie Edwards, Morgan Fox, Jack Colback and Michael Frey all earning £15,000 per week.
In fact, not many players in the Championship can say they earn more than £30k per week. This season, only 36 players are on a higher weekly salary than Cook, eight of whom are on loan from sides in the top division of their respective country.
So, it's clear that QPR values Cook in their side but, with the former three-time Championship promotion winner edging closer to his 34th birthday, can QPR warrant giving a player like Cook a similar deal after this season?
Evidently, Cook is still performing at a high level in the Championship. According to Fotmob, the 33-year-old ranks among the top 20% of Championship centre-backs in the percentage of tackles won and percentage of duels won.
Additionally, as Goodman referenced in his exclusive interview with Football League World, Cook's wealth of experience will help the likes of Liam Morrison, who would be able to learn from someone with over 500 career appearances.
Cook has also featured in 30+ Championship games for the second time in as many seasons at Loftus Road too, so it's not like QPR would be giving a large contract to a player who spends half the season out of the side.
The centre-back still has a lot in the tank, and QPR fans will be hoping that a contract extension announcement will come sooner rather than later.
