Liverpool’s Summer Targets: Isak and Alvarez Unlikely, Kerkez a Realistic Option

As speculation builds over Liverpool’s summer business under Arne Slot, Anfield Index contributors Trev Downey and Dave Davis provided insight into the players being linked with Anfield—and the reality of getting deals done.

While names like Alexander Isak and Julian Alvarez generate excitement among fans, Downey and Davis struck a more grounded tone during their discussion, highlighting the logistical and financial hurdles surrounding those moves. In contrast, AFC Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez appears to be a more attainable signing.

Alexander Isak: “A relentless rumour” that’s “too daft financially”

Newcastle United forward Alexander Isak has been a recurring name in Liverpool transfer rumours, and Downey acknowledged as much: “It’s just because it’s such a relentless rumour.”

However, both he and Davis were in agreement that this is one for the dreamers. “I still think it’s too daft financially for us to ever really consider it,” said Downey, dismissing the idea that the club would be prepared to meet the likely fee.

Davis added that despite suggestions Arsenal may no longer be a serious contender, “his options are getting smaller,” which leaves a theoretical opening—but not one they expect Liverpool to take.

Julian Alvarez: “That’s the one I’d love us to do”

Julian Alvarez of Atletico Madrid also came up in conversation, who has a price tag of around £85million. Downey made his admiration clear: “I think I’d love to see Alvarez come in. That’s the one for me.”

Still, there was a strong recognition that such a move sits firmly in the ‘long shot’ category. Davis noted, “Whether they can do that… the chasm feels vast for those two.” The financial gap and the nature of Alvarez’s current club situation mean this would require a dramatic shift to become viable.

Milos Kerkez: “The most likely is that one”

Amid the bigger names, Trev and Dave turned their attention to a far more achievable target: AFC Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez. “Of all the ones we’re hearing, the one that’s probably the most likely is that one,” Downey said.

There was mention of Bournemouth reportedly rejecting part-exchange offers and valuing Kerkez at £45 million. Even so, Downey speculated that Liverpool might “pull a few strokes with a player part exchange” to make the deal work. “Maybe even a Joe Gomez,” he added, pointing out the possibility of a mutually beneficial solution for both clubs.

Kerkez, they noted, has “that physicality” and “seems to have, if not the peak Robo end product, the ability to get it into that danger area.” While his defensive credentials remain under discussion, both contributors seemed to agree that Kerkez is Liverpool’s most tangible link so far.

Realism over Excitement

As Davis put it, “There’s zero doubt Liverpool are looking at a lot of number nines or people that can play that position.” But with so many names in the mix, both agreed it’s difficult to place a confident bet on any of the higher-profile links.

Downey summed up the wider approach best when he said, “Maybe we should just see the wood for the trees… maybe they’re the ones we should be going on.”

The podcast concluded that while Isak and Alvarez may excite the fanbase, a deal for Milos Kerkez is far more in keeping with Liverpool’s current model and budget.
