I think we can all agree that Jacob Murphy has had a fantastic season.

Nine goals and thirteen assists so far.

His latest goal being that outrageous effort he put past Dean Henderson the other night, a shot/goa; he 100% meant against Crystal Palace.

One of the thirteen assists being when he outjumped Andy Robertson to find Alex Isak for the winning goal at Wembley in the League Cup Final.

The most important assist in Newcastle United’s eecent history? You bet.

I’ve got to be honest, I have not always been a fan of Jacob Murphy, but he has won me over this past couple of months.

I had to laugh when Davy Hat-Trick had this to say when commenting on his performance after the rout against Crystal Palace; “Regular readers will be glad to hear that the bloke two seats to my right still thinks Murphy is rubbish, although he did concede he’s had a canny season.”

An opinion that resonates, if I’m being honest.

The reason I say this is because in my view, Jacob Murphy concedes possession more than I’d like and despite his nine goals this campaign, his finishing is often wayward.

Harsh? No doubt, and I imagine there’ll be a few pelters heading in my direction in the comments section.

What worries me is that our wonderful Paraguayan, Miguel Almiron, had his own purple patch the last time Newcastle United qualified for the Champions League.

During that season, Miggy scored seven goals in seven matches prior to the Qatar World Cup and although he continued to impress after Premier League proceedings resumed, I think its fair to say that he never reached those heights again and as a result, is now plying his trade in the MLS.

I think that’s the challenge for Jacob Murphy.

On current form, he should be being touted for an England call up. On current form, talk of Newcastle United signing another right winger seems churlish, but I think he needs to perform at this level over a sustained period.

Articulate when interviewed, and not your typical footballer, a young man who has his roots in Birtley, south Gateshead, and who played such an integral part in ending Newcastle United’s trophy drought, has an opportunity to become a club legend.

He probably is already, but should Jacob Murphy’s form continue into next season and beyond, he will cement that legacy.
