AC Milan rekindled talks with Fabio Paratici recently, but some background has emerged regarding why they will not hire him.

Tuttosport have published a report regarding the soap opera that is Milan’s sporting director hunt. It is a story that has now been going on for at least three months and experienced a new scene over the Easter weekend, involving a protagonist who seemed to have left the scene: Fabio Paratici.

What happened with Paratici

Let’s take a step back. In February, it was the owner Gerry Cardinale and his advisor Zlatan Ibrahimovic who met three candidates for the role of sporting director in London: Paratici, Igli Tare and Andrea Berta (who showed up more out of courtesy, having an agreement with Arsenal already).

After those talks, Giorgio Furlani came into the picture, first going to New York to reiterate to Cardinale and RedBird Capital his ‘powers’ as CEO, then from mid-March he took charge of the matter, deepening the discussions with Paratici.

The duo met first in Milan and then at the beginning of April in London together with Cardinale himself. Everything seemed ready to be signed, but then Milan took a step back. Why? There were risks involved.

The suspension of the former Juventus director until July 20 for the 2023 capital gains case involving the Bianconeri was one, with Milan having received external pressure on the risks that Paratici’s hiring would have entailed in the months preceding the end of the sanction.

Then there is the fact that Paratici – together with Agnelli, Arrivabene and Nedved – are still dealing with the process related to the Prisma investigation. Moreover, Furlani himself was not fully convinced by Paratici and has had another profile in mind for some time: Tony D’Amico of Atalanta.

Thus the Paratici trail ran aground and Furlani resumed contact with Tare, who he met in mid-April in Rome. The former Lazio director, free from constraints and therefore immediately eligible for registration, evidently did not make an impact, because Milan decided to leave him hanging.

Mystery remains

As mentioned, Furlani would like to hire D’Amico. It is no coincidence that a message has arrived from Casa Milan in recent weeks: the new director, if he is ever hired (because it is not excluded that the management will remain as it is), will arrive at the end of the sporting season.

After Sky broke the news of Cardinale’s trip to Milan before Easter (including a chat with Furlani and Ibrahimovic), Radio Rossonera revealed that on Easter Monday – in a luxury hotel in the Lake Como area – the owner met Paratici, whom he had not seen since April 1st in London.

Was it a face to face to reopen the talks, or to say goodbye after what happened in the days following the meeting in England? It is difficult to say, even if from what is emerging, the Paratici-Milan trail has not reopened.

Both for the reasons listed above, and because the director is close to returning to Tottenham. So, return to the theme of the last few days: waiting, with Furlani continuing to work behind the scenes on D’Amico.
