Victor Lindelöf was substituted early in Manchester United’s victory over Olympique Lyonnais last Thursday after the defender received news of a family emergency. His wife, Maja, took to social media to explain that the centre-back was rushed away from the game after he was told that his three-year-old son had been involved in an accident.
Maja said that their child “had fallen into a glass staircase” and “split his entire head open” while chasing his big brother. She also added, “He had to have plastic surgery to put his forehead back together. He was put under anaesthetic.” However, a tragedy was avoided, and she explains that their child is recuperating well. Maja states, “The doctors say he’ll have a big scar on his forehead,” but other than that, their son will be fine.
Lindelöf’s teammate Noussair Mazraoui similarly had to leave the Europa League quarter-final against Lyon early, and also for personal reasons. Manchester United went on to eliminate the Ligue 1 side from the competition. The two clubs needed extra time to settle the match with the score 5-4 on the night (7-6 on aggregate).
Manchester United will take on Athletic Club in the upcoming semi-finals.
