Chelsea loaned out two attacking midfield options in January in the form of Carney Chukwuemeka and Joao Felix.
In both cases, the intention was obvious – get them playing regularly so that there are interested parties ready to buy them in the summer. Ideally AC Milan and Dortmund would just convert the loans into permanent deals.
However, neither is going to plan. AC Milan are having a disastrous season in general, and buying Joao Felix for a lot of money is very low on their agenda right now.
Carney has been a little more unlucky. Dortmund are doing a lot better, especially with new coach Niko Kovac having been appointed. But injuries, which have blighted Carney’s career so far, continue to prevent him picking up a regular run in the first team. He’s yet to make a start, and has come off the bench 5 times since the start of February.
Because of this, sources in Germany are now convinced that Dortmund will not be exercising the €35m buy for Chukwuemeka in the summer. They might reconsider that, if he’s able to get fit and start some games before the end of the season. The most important factor will be if they get into the European places and secure some extra income.
But the way this is heading, the most likely outcome looks to be that Chukwuemeka is loaned out again next season and we will start the whole process all over again.
There is still time, but something pretty special needs to happen now. Dortmund are way down in 11th, and would need to make up 10 points on Frankfurt to secure Champions League football, making that almost impossibly. Carney can still impress in those games however, and against Barcelona in the Champions League Quarter Final to come.
