Riccardo Calafiori was absent from Italy’s second Nations League clash with Germany after injuring himself in the first game.

Calafiori fell awkwardly and appeared to injure his knee late on in Italy’s first-leg defeat, and could not continue.

He was then left out of the squad as Italy suffered a 5-4 aggregate defeat to Germany.

It is unclear as of yet how serious the problem is for Calafiori and whether he will miss any game time for Arsenal.

The 22-year-old was sidelined earlier this season with a knee injury after a similar incident to the one which occurred against Germany.

Elsewhere, Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino again came off the bench late on as Spain progressed past the Netherlands in the Nations League, also on penalties, but Jurrien Timber again missed the game.

Timber missed the first-leg clash through illness and was again absent for the second leg.

Merino scored a late winner in the first game to salvage a 2-2 draw, but after a 3-3 draw in the second leg the game went to penalties.

The 28-year-old was one of those to score in the shoot-out as Spain progressed.

Gunners defender William Saliba played 90 minutes to help France progress past Croatia on penalties in the Nations League.

They were beaten 2-0 by Croatia in the first game, but goals from Michael Olise and Ousmane Dembele saw them reverse the scoreline in the second leg before winning the penalty shoot-out.

Kieran Tierney’s Scotland suffered a 3-0 home defeat to Greece to relegate them in the Nations League.

They had won the first game 1-0 and despite entering the game in the second half, Tierney could not turn his team’s fortunes around.

Leandro Trossard helped Belgium overturn a 3-1 first-leg deficit to beat Oleksandr Zinchenko’s Ukraine and secure Nations League promotion.

The forward played 69 minutes as a double from Romelu Lukaku and goal from substitute Maxim De Cuyper saw Belgium through.

Arsenal duo Declan Rice and Myles Lewis-Skelly could be back in action on Monday when England face Latvia at Wembley having both started in the win against Albania.

Jakub Kiwior could also feature for Poland against Malta while Thomas Partey’s Ghana take on Madagascar.
