In this last stretch of the 2024-25 season, FC Barcelona are still competing for all the big titles. They are in the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League, in which they will face Inter Milan, while their next game is set to be the Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid.
Meanwhile, they are also leading the league race, enjoying a 4-point advantage over the Merengues. With the way the two teams are playing, it looks likely that the La Liga race will be decided only in the very last games of the season.
However, the Blaugranes have shown their intent to do everything to win the league, and this intent was nowhere more apparent than in the recent game against Celta Vigo.
The Catalans had to come back from a 3-1 deficit at the hour-mark to completely turn the game around and emerge the winners, with their final goal coming in the last minutes of injury time.
Before that final goal, Raphinha had scored another goal, a header which made the scoreline 3-3 and raised the hopes of getting the full three points despite the desperate position of Barcelona in that match.
As Mundo Deportivo has noted, this was the 20th headed goal that the Blaugranes had scored this season, showcasing their usage of a resource that they have not relied upon a lot historically.
It is not only from set-piece situations that Hansi Flick’s team is generating chances for headed goals, as they also rely a lot on crosses from open play. In this regard, Raphinha is one of the best deliverers, while also being regularly on the end of crosses, having 7 headed goals to his name up to now. Similarly, Pedri and Lamine Yamal also put in a lot of accurate crosses.
But the most decisive player in this regard remains Robert Lewandowski, who has scored 6 headed goals this season so far. The defender Inigo Martinez and Eric Garcia both have 3 headed goals to their names this season, while Pau Cubarsi’s only goal for the team so far has also been from a header.
These headed goals have proven to be the difference in Barcelona’s favor in some games, and Flick definitely deserves credit for ensuring the team is utilizing this resource to the fullest.
