Lazio will reportedly have to do without Nuno Tavares for the remainder of the campaign after suffering yet another setback.
In the first few months of the season, the 25-year-old emerged as one of the best players in Serie A, providing his teammates with eight assists in as many fixtures. However, the injury bug reared its ugly head in recent months, so the Portuguese has been struggling to stay fit.
Tavares had picked up a fresh physical problem a couple of weeks back against Atalanta, but he and Marco Baroni were both determined to pull off a timely return to action. Hence, the left-back entered the pitch as a second-half substitute in the second leg Europa League clash against Bodo/Glimt, only to suffer another relapse that saw him leave the pitch in tears in extra time.
According to Il Messaggero (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), the club has decided to delay the player’s clinical tests, but the early sensations suggest his season is already over, as he’s unlikely to recover for any of the club’s six remaining Serie A fixtures.
Tavares joined Lazio last summer on loan from Arsenal with an obligation to buy set at €6 million, in addition to a 40% sell-on fee. The Portugual international certainly has many admirers, but it remains to be seen if any club would be willing to make a big investment in a player who’s struggling to remain fit, especially with Claudio Lotito requesting figures in the region of €50 million.
