There is not a lot of football left to be played this season. Celtic are on course for another treble. They have already won the League Cup, have a lead in the Premiership that is almost impossible to overcome for the Rangers and are in the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup where they will take on St Johnstone.
So, things are looking good for Brendan Rodgers' team. They cannot afford to become complacent though. A bad day at the office could prove costly, especially in a knockout competition like the Scottish Cup.
One major worry that Celtic have had in recent weeks is the fitness situation of Kasper Schmeichel. The Danish goalkeeper was injured while away on international duty and then went on to finish the remainder of the game despite being in visible pain. There are fears that he could be out for the remainder of the season.
Celtic do have a backup option in Viljami Sinisalo. But it remains to be seen how the inexperienced goalkeeper will perform in high-pressure games. Interestingly, it was initially believed that Schmeichel would be out for about five to six weeks. But, he has already been pictured in training, raising hopes around an early return.
Rodgers seems to be hoping for the same thing. As reported by 67 Hail Hail, the Celtic manager said about the situation of Schmeichel:
"No, no, he’s clearly not damaged his feet.“So, he can use his feet and work on his touch and whatnot. I think the time we’ve been given has been five to six weeks by the medical experts, but that could be sooner.“So, he feels good, he’s got some mobility, he’s got rotation there, but we just obviously have to be careful with the blade and his shoulders.“He can do other things, so he’s out on the training field and working on the technical side of his game."
So, Rodgers has acknowledged that Schmeichel's return could come sooner. As for his return to training, it looks like the veteran goalkeeper is working on the technical side of his game, which is not his strongest point.
Overall, this is a positive sign though. The fact that Schmeichel has even been cleared to train might be an indication that the injury is not serious and he could potentially be back available sooner than anticipated. Let's see how things play out.
