It is no secret that FC Barcelona is a team that plays some of the most scintillating football across Europe. In terms of offensive effectiveness, they are quite possibly the team to watch across Europe’s top leagues. However, that does not mean that Barcelona is flawless in every way.
Despite playing quite the risky high-line to apply extra pressure on their opponents, it is rather interesting how their moments of vulnerability rarely involve the high-line. Instead, opponents have made use of another outlet to create issues for the Catalan giants.
Leganes, the team that they are about to face, are one of the teams that have exploited this particular vulnerability of Barça’s as well. As highlighted by Mundo Deportivo, defending corners and set-pieces have ended up proving to be problematic for Barça at times.
During their last game against Leganes, La Blaugrana suffered a 1-0 defeat at the Montjuic Stadium in La Liga courtesy of a goal scored through a corner. Then, recently as well, Barça could not manage more than a 1-1 draw against Real Betis, and the only goal they scored came through a corner as well.
Even against SL Benfica during the second leg of their Round of 16 tie, Barcelona conceded only once in a 3-1 win, and that was through a corner as well. These constant reminders have to be taken more seriously, and Hansi Flick’s side needs to sort themselves out in that regard.
Barcelona have already dropped far too many crucial points this season, and they must now focus on minimizing every possible way they can be scored against. To achieve that, the recurring issues with defending corners need to be addressed urgently, especially with the final stretch of the season now underway.
Against sides like Leganes, who tend to put most of their emphasis on the defensive part of the game, even a single goal can sometimes be game-changing or potentially game-winning. For that reason, Barcelona must continue to focus on their attack while also maintaining a good understanding of how to defend.
