Manchester City and the Premier League now have a new date for their respective diaries as they prepare to clash legally once again later this year.

Legal representatives of the four-in-a-row Premier League champions first challenged the top-flight over the rules back in January 2024, with the subsequent tribunal ruling in October 2024 that three aspects of the rules were unlawful.

Following a further hearing, a judgment was handed down earlier this year finding that all the rules must be void, while Manchester City still believe the rewritten APT rules are anti-competitive and breach public law principles.

Manchester City had wanted to sign new sponsorship deals with both Etihad Airways and First Abu Dhabi Bank back in 2023, submitting the deals to the Premier League for approval, only to be blocked for not being fair-market value under the Associated Party Transaction rules.

And now, according to the information of The Lawyer Magazine, Manchester City’s challenge to the Premier League’s new rules governing commercial deals negotiated by its member clubs will come to trial in mid-October 2025.

It is revealed that the details of Manchester City’s challenge were shared with the other 19 English top-flight clubs at the beginning of April, with their statement of claim understood to be dated 27 March.

It must be stressed that the aforementioned legal action brought by Manchester City is entirely separate to the one covering the widely-reported 115 charges against the Etihad club for alleged breaches of Premier League financial rules.

Manchester City strenuously deny any wrongdoing, and while a verdict on the matter had been anticipated for the springtime and perhaps during the March international break, recent reports suggest that a decision should not be expected any time soon.
