The Baggies are in the mix for a top six finish in the Championship this season, but are currently out of position.

The gap to Coventry City in sixth place is currently three points with just four games to go, with Albion seventh in the table.

Mowbray took charge of West Brom in January following Carlos Corberan’s move to Valencia, and previously guided the club to the Premier League in 2008.

Prutton has backed Mowbray to stay on at West Brom even if the club misses out on the play-offs.

He believes that the 61-year-old’s experience will be very helpful in sustaining another promotion challenge next year, having been there and done that with the Baggies before.

“If West Brom don’t get to the play-offs, do I back Mowbray (to get push for promotion next season)? Yeah, I do, I do,” Prutton exclusively told Football League World.

“It’s time to build or assess the squad with personnel in the summer.

“That ability to hit the ground running, from his point of view, I think he’d be well placed to lead them to a potential promotion push.

“Yes, of course, lots of competition, but Tony having done it before, having more experience on the clock and, as I said, being able to have a full crack at it.

“Maybe, as he said, he enjoyed the emotion of coming back, but he wants to concentrate on the football, maybe having a full season just being able to do that will see a more prolonged assault on the division from West Brom.”

Next up for West Brom is a trip to face sixth place Coventry on 18 April in a crucial clash in the battle for the play-offs.

Mowbray deserves longer West Brom stint

Mowbray has proven a solid appointment, taking over midway through the campaign and maintaining a competitive level with the side.

We’ve seen over at Blackburn Rovers that this isn’t easy, with Valerien Ismael struggling.

Mowbray knows the club, and knows what it takes to fight for promotion, which is invaluable experience at this level.

He’s done enough to deserve backing in the summer, and a crack at a full campaign with the club, or at the very least to start next season in the dugout, even if Albion ultimately miss out on a place in the Premier League.
