Tony Mowbray loses his job amid poor run of results

The 61-year-old, previously manager at Celtic, lasted just three months at West Brom, where of course Mikey Johnston these days plays his football. With their play-off chances fading fast amid some terrible form which has produced just one win in eight matches, it seemed inevitable that the managerial axe would fall on the former Celtic defender.

West Brom have dropped to tenth in the table after defeats to the likes of Derby County, Coventry City, Bristol City, and Sunderland.

Mowbray took West Brom job after recovering from illness

Having left Birmingham City due to health issues, Tony recovered from his cancer scare to return to the game in January, returning to West Brom and signing a two and a half year contract. Three months into that he gets sacked. The 3-1 defeat to Derby at the weekend leaves West Brom six points adrift of the play-offs with games running out.

West Brom issued a statement on their official website confirming Tony Mowbray’s departure from the football club.

“West Bromwich Albion have today parted company with Head Coach Tony Mowbray. Assistant Head Coach Mark Venus has also departed the club. The club would like to place on record its thanks to Tony and Mark for their efforts – but has made the decision to part company following a series of poor results. “Tony and Mark will forever be welcome at The Hawthorns and their contributions to the club winning the 2007/08 Sky Bet Championship title will never be forgotten. Everyone at Albion wishes Tony and Mark all the very best in the future.”

Tony Mowbray

Tony Mowbray was appointed Celtic manager on 16 June 2009. The central defender turned coach played for Celtic four nearly four years in the early 1990s and was the popular choice for the job having enjoyed impressive spells at Hibs and West Brom.

However Mowbray’s tenure was short lived and best to be forgotten; that allowed Neil Lennon to become Celtic boss, shepherding in two decade of dominance for the club.

Mowbray’s football at times was very attractive and was the Celtic way. However, defeats to lesser oppositions and failing to win the big games meant that even without the humbling in Paisley, he would have found it a tall order to retain his job.

A shocking defeat in Paisley ended Mowbray’s time as Celtic manager

Celtic were beaten 4-0 by St Mirren as Mowbray’s era crumbled in the midweek fixture. You would be hard-tasked to find defending that bad in an amateur league as the Buddies couldn’t believe their luck.

The season was summed up by a 2-0 defeat to Ross County in the Scottish Cup, a week or so after he was relieved of his duties. The Championship side dumped Celtic out the Scottish Cup at Hampden, meaning that the miserable season would end without any trophies.

Mowbray arrived at the club at a time when Celtic began to cutback. Unlike Gordon Strachan’s sides, who were pragmatic and could win ugly, Mowbray’s sides forfeited defensive robustness for attacking football and ultimately, the result was a shambles. He was, and still is, highly regarded by the Celtic support as a man and as a Celt – even if his managerial tenure was a huge disappointment.
