AC Milan have had some serious problems on the defensive end this season, though their attack has been a lot more impressive.

This morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanPress) has published an analysis of Milan’s fortunes at both ends this season, starting with a rather worrying statistic regarding the rearguard.

Milan are the fourth-worst defence in the league for Expected Goals against. What does this mean? It means that they concede a lot of quality chances, something that can be expected from teams fighting not to be relegated, not from a team that should be at least in a top four battle.

From an attacking point of view, however, things are better, and this explains the total imbalance between defence and attack. From this point of view, the Rossoneri are the team that has created the most scoring opportunities.

However, Milan are third behind Empoli and Verona for ‘under-performance’ when it comes to taking these chances, which means that these great opportunities have often and willingly been wasted.

It certainly fits with the trend of the season under both coaches: an inability to keep goals out at one end, and an inability to seize the big moments in games at the other.
