GdS: ‘Win and say goodbye’ – last derby beckons for several Milan and Inter players

The fifth and final Milan derby of the season will take place at San Siro tonight, and for several players it could be their last derby altogether.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below) write this morning, it is natural that players can come and go during the summer and thus might not feature in the Derby della Madonnina again. However, some big protagonists in the fixture could head for the exit door.

Theo in the balance

With tonight’s game, Theo’s derby count could close at 20: so far sive wins, three draws and 11 defeats. Hernandez scored a goal and provided an assist against the Nerazzurri, both in the Supercoppa Italiana final.

The count goes up if you consider yellow cards (six) and expulsions (two). Theo gets fired up when he sees the Nerazzurri, but he has rarely been decisive. Doing so in what could be his last derby would have a broader meaning.

More Stories / The Match

The idea scenario is that he makes a decisive contribution or two, embracing the red and black crowd after a difficult season personally and for the team. Theo has been sent to the bench, while also having the captaincy taken away from him.

It is unlikely that it will be enough to rewrite his destiny and add a new chapter to his Milan history. His contract is expiring in the summer of 2026 and will not be renewed, with a farewell expected in the summer.

It is also the last derby for other Milan players. Joao Felix, on loan from Chelsea, will return to London at the end of the season. His debut with a dinked goal against Roma, in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals, had everyone under a false impression.

The same could be true for Kyle Walker, while Fikayo Tomori has a different story. With Milan he was champion of Italy, and was among the protagonists of the best defence in the league. Tammy Abraham and Luka Jovic are also destined to depart at present, among others.

Nerazzurri swan song

As in Bologna, Inter should have Lautaro-Correa up front. One is the club captain and the certainty of the attack, while the other is the Argentine with his suitcases packed.

Joaquín’s goal return has been too poor, only one in the five against Verona. Even in this case, few arguments to push the club to negotiate the renewal of the agreement expiring in June.

Against Milan Correa has scored five goals in his career, including one in a second leg of the Coppa Italia semi-final, but all with the Lazio shirt. Never in a derby. Will the first one come at the last attempt? To be remembered it’s always a great idea.

Mehdi Taremi instead had time to leave his mark on the derby, even if it was then erased by the Rossoneri comeback: it had happened in the Supercoppa match played in Riyadh. His was the doubling of the advantage before Milan roared bacl. It remains one of the three goals scored in the Inter shirt.

For him, the derby began in the summer of 2023, when he seemed destined to join Milan. Then came Porto’s about-turn and his arrival in Milano, on the Inter side, a year later on a free transfer. His €3m net salary per year is instead considered too high, so he could be sold.
