Ruud Gullit has offered his thoughts on the season that AC Milan are having, and it is rather predictably not a positive assessment.

Gullit is obviously someone who knows what it takes to win at Milan, having joined in the late 1980s to form part of a notable Dutch trio with Marco van Basten and Frank Rijkaard. The midfielder won three Serie A titles and two European Cups with the Rossoneri, among other trophies.

This current side are a long way away from repeating some of those memorable triumphs. At present, Sergio Conceicao’s side sit ninth in the Serie A table and – without winning the Coppa Italia – they face the real prospect of not playing in Europe at all during the 2025-26 season.

Gullit spoke at the Laureus World Sports Awards in Madrid and he was asked by a reporter about what has been a disastrous 2024-25 campaign for his former club.

“Conceicao is a good coach, but you have to win. Milan have accumulated too many defeats, they are unrecognisable. He arrived at a difficult time, the Supercoppa victory was a moment, but you have to go to the Champions League otherwise it is not a good season,” he said (via MilanPress).

“I feel sorry, especially for the fans, people are wondering what is happening. The match against Genoa [the 125th anniversary celebrations] was terrible, the fans are not happy. If you are used to winning, what the people want is to continue winning.”
