Chelsea still have important games to play this season, but those upstairs are getting geared up for a potentially massive battle to sign a striker this summer.
There are a number of tempting options out there, but as always there are also a huge group of teams up and down the Premier League looking for attackers.
Chelsea have gone through long lists of players in that position without making a signing in the last couple of years, but it seems they’ve now identified a favourite, someone they’re really comfortable with pursuing. Liam Delap is young, available relatively cheaply because of his release clause, and seems a popular choice with both manager Enzo Maresca and the sporting directors.
A major problem is likely to be interest from other clubs – Manchester City have a buy-back clause on the 22 year old, while Manchester United are said to be interested. In the latter case, at least, the Blues seem to have the edge.
A report from GiveMeSport today has outlined just why Maresca’s men may have the edge in this chase:
“Chelsea have had Delap on their radar longer than Manchester United, and internally they believe they have got the edge. Their early interest shows clear, defined strategy and boss Enzo Maresca is keen on the deal, having known him from their time at Manchester City.”

Given a fixed release clause makes the deal much easier to negotiate, it looks like our aim will be to try to sign up Delap in time to play at the Club World Cup in June. That would mean him signing for us almost before the season is over – the tournament begins in early June.
We could be in for a thrilling couple of weeks to come as we try to get this over the line.
