The Lilywhites have suffered five straight defeats in all competitions and they have work to do to equal or better last season’s top half of the table finish in the Barclays Women’s Super League.
Poor results have recently resulted in other Barclays Women’s Super League bosses being axed. When speaking to the media ahead of this weekend’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against West Ham United, Spurs boss Vilahamn said that he is not worrying about any pressure that may hang over him and that he is fully-focused on finding solutions to his side’s poor form.
“When five colleagues have lost their jobs, of course, it’s a lot but I can’t worry about that,” Vilahamn said. “The club are looking at things over a long period of time and I think we are taking steps. We are having a few bad moments in that but we are learning on this journey.
“I don’t feel any pressure of being fired. If they want to fire me then do it but I’m doing my best and I feel like we are doing it together. I don’t really feel that [pressure] but you never know in this business. I am aware that one day it will happen and I will just accept it and move on, so it doesn’t affect me.
“Obviously, we do need to pick up some better results. We’ve had a lot of losses in a row. Manchester City was actually a good game but the Brighton game was nowhere near what we wanted to do. We had a game plan which outlined what we wanted to do after Manchester City but we failed, that’s on me.
“I am not looking at it as ‘lose against West Ham and I’m out’, I’m looking at how we can improve in these next six games to build something for next season.”
Spurs travel to The Chigwell Construction Stadium to contest this weekend’s London derby against West Ham United and Vilahamn expects another entertaining game against The Hammers.
He said “Rehanne [Skinner] is in her second year. They’ve signed a lot of players over the last one-and-a-half years and they’re quite connected with how they want to play and they know how to use their strengths. They’ve had really good games against Arsenal and Manchester City.
“It is always a really tough game against them. There have been a lot of games since I’ve been here where they’ve had a lot of goals. I expect an open game where both teams are daring to play football and create goal chances. Hopefully, we can turn our bad form into a win because we want to have a good run of performances in these last six games and end with some wins.”
West Ham United have been defeated just twice at home this season. Vilahamn sees the East Londoners as a team that uses both their surroundings and on-field strengths to their advantage.
He said “It’s their home and it’s a unique stadium. They love it there but I don’t think many other teams think it’s an amazing stadium. They have their strengths there.
“How they are using their squad right now; they’re pressing well and taking their chances – they score from set-pieces, they score from transitions. They have some really good players and Rehanne has been in this league for a few years, so she knows how to grow a team.
“I have enormous respect for them. They are in and around us in the table, so if we lose, they’re going to pass us and if we win, we can create a gap. It’s an important game in that way but I feel that myself and Rehanne are in similar positions; we are both trying to build something better. Both of us are in similar positions in the table too and have the potential to be higher.”
Tottenham Hotspur’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at West Ham United kicks-off at 12pm on Sunday afternoon.
