The long-awaited official relegation of Leicester City was confirmed after they lost 1-0 at home to lead-leaders Liverpool.
With Southampton already destined for a return to the Championship it was always going to be a matter of time before Leicester (and Ipswich) ensured that all three promoted teams would go down.
In fairness to Ruud van Nistelrooy's team, they kept the Reds out for as long as possible although them getting a goal never seemed too likely.
Arne Slot's team had to wait until the 76th minute to break the deadlock after several other opportunities to score.
The Foxes had plenty of chances to clear a corner from the left with the ball bouncing around the Leicester penalty area in the 76th minute. Eventually it found its way to Trent Alexander-Arnold who did well to keep his shot down and find the net. It was a goal that might be bittersweet for the player and the fans considering that the defender's mooted move to Real Madrid looks like it is ever close to being confirmed.
From that point on, it was hard to imagine the home team getting back into the game with that single goal enough to send Leicester back down to the second tier with Ruud van Nistelrooy's future certainly in doubt now.
For Liverpool though, this was another game they could check off the list of upcoming fixtures as they count down to their inevitable Premier League title.
