Although he’s not exactly the most popular figure at Carrington, Jadon Sancho could end up rejoining Manchester United’s ranks next summer.
The 25-year-old endured two and a half unhappy years at the club between the summer of 2021 and January 2024 when he returned to Borussia Dortmund on a six-month loan.
The winger managed to escape his exile under Erik ten Hag and revive his career at Signal Iduna Park, at least temporarily.
Last summer, United decided to cast him away once more, with Chelsea betting on his credentials, signing him on loan with an obligation to buy at the end of the season for £25 million.
Sancho had an electric start to the season, prompting Ian Wright to hail him as an ‘amazing bargain’. However, the England international soon ran out of steam, and is now struggling to make an impact. The Man City youth product has yet to score a Premier League goal since the turn of the year, while only providing one assist.
Therefore, some reports recently suggested Chelsea will opt to pay a penalty worth £5 million to relieve themselves of the obligation to buy the player.

While Fabrizio Romano was quick to pour cold water on this scenario, Ben Foster still expects Chelsea to exercise this option which, according to the retired goalkeeper, would be the most sensible.
“I would be very surprised if Chelsea took up that option (to buy him) and paid the money,” said the former Man Utd custodian during his appearance on his Fozcast podcast.
“He’s been okay this season, but Jadon Sancho hasn’t ripped up any trees. If he did rip up trees, £25 million is a snip in today’s market. But I think he’s started 17 games for Chelsea in the Premier League this season and only got two goals and four assists.
“It’s not what you want and it’s not enough really. He probably is going to go back to Man United and Chelsea are going to have to pay £ 5million to send a player back.
Foster believes Sancho is a decent player, but his displays aren’t enough to justify his £200,000 weekly salary, which represents a major headache for Man Utd.
The club’s co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe had recently lamented some of the transfers conducted before his arrival that the Reds are still having to pay for, naming Sancho among five ‘overpaid’ and ‘not good enough players’ the club signed in recent years.
