Manchester United are closing in on a move for Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha, according to the Daily Mail. The Brazilian is edging towards an agreement on personal terms ahead of a potential summer switch to Old Trafford.
United still need to trigger his £62.5 million release clause, but discussions are progressing well, and club insiders hope to seal a deal by next month.
The timing is crucial, with United still operating within their remaining room under the Profit and Sustainability Rules of the Premier League.
Man Utd are determined to stave off competition from Newcastle United for Cunha. The player is reportedly enticed by the prospect of playing a central role in the Ruben Amorim rebuild at Old Trafford.
Amorim is a long-time admirer of his versatility and attacking output. The Portuguese tactician spoke with the forward during and after recent matches between United and Wolves.
Apart from Cunha, Man Utd held talks over potential moves for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, RB Leipzig jewels Xavi Simons and Benjamin Sesko, Crystal Palace man Eberechi Eze, and Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo. United are also monitoring Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap.
A move for Cunha is potentially exciting for the Red Devils but spells doom for academy graduate Alejandro Garnacho.
Despite recording 10 goals and nine assists this season, the 20-year-old has come under fire for poor decision-making and finishing. The arrival of Cunha will force Garnacho to look for another stomping ground.
Garnacho still has massive room for improvement and should play understudy to Cunha, but he will likely want to feel important at a club where he is making the starting XI week in and week out.
Napoli and Chelsea showed interest in January and will likely be at the front of the queue for his signature this summer, should he decide to leave.
