Manchester City fans celebrated a significant win over Aston Villa on Tuesday night.
A late Nunes goal deep into added time claiming the win.
Manchester City fans and Aston Villa fans both hoping their teams can qualify for the Champions League.
As a Newcastle United fan, obviously I had a vested interest in last night’s match.
So I tuned in to see how it would play out, where the result would leave the Champions League picture.
As I watched the game, something stood out.
No, it wasn’t how boring the match was in the main, though that was undoubtedly true. Aston Villa holding out for a point, or trying to, whilst Man City endlessly passed the ball rather than trying to get through the deep lying visiting defence.
What you couldn’t help but notice, were an incredible number of empty seats.
Every area of the Etihad the camera panned in on, you could see loads of empty seats.
Such a massive game, why weren’t Manchester City fans filling so many of these seats?
I had a dig deeper and discovered why.
Manchester City fans desperately trying to convince their club not to raise ticket prices ever higher. The belief is that their club is trying to get rid of as many season ticket holders as possible, then charge higher and higher match by match tickets to increase money they can make from tourist fans. The club not caring if certain midweek matches see empty seats, as they will make far more money overall.
Manchester City fans have seen prices go up and up, the cheapest adult price for this Villa game was £71, going up as high as £88. Whilst for children, the cheapest £42, going up as high as £58.
No wonder this led to so many empty seats last night, as this image shows…
Pep Guardiola asked about the outrageous ticket prices and the thousands of empty seats at the Aston Villa match – 23 April 2025:
“I am on the side of the people, I am a supporter of Manchester City as well.
“I don’t have to pay for tickets but I understand the feeling.”
Only in November 2024, it was Manchester United fans on the receiving end.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe raised matchday prices that had started at £40 for adults and £25 for children, up to a minimum of £66 per match for both adults AND children!
The Premier League owners are going to eventually kill the golden goose, all the major clubs are at it, especially those that know they are guaranteed to fill their stadium at almost any price.
By doing everything they can to force out as many ‘traditional’ fans as possible, especially season ticket holders, these clubs desperate to have as many fans, especially football tourists, who will pay top dollar for one-off matches, hopefully spending fortunes in the club shop as well when they visit.
Any Newcastle United fans who think our club is any different, think again.
If you are a Newcastle United member then you will already be well aware of the direction of travel, whilst many season ticket holders are now realising where things are heading, as they see what they will be paying next season.
One of the justifications and indeed it was one Jim the Rat used in November with Man U fans, is ‘having to’ charge ever higher prices because all rival clubs are doing the same.
There has never been as much money in the top tier of English football as there is now.
There is no justification for any of the major clubs to charge so much, to keep raising prices.
They are all going to use the justification that everybody else is doing the same BECAUSE they are all in this together!
