Red Devils attempt to refocus on Premier League duty against resurgent opponents after epic Lyon comeback

Manchester United will attempt to turn their attentions back to the Premier League as they host in-form Wolves on Easter Sunday.

Many Red Devils fans will still be on cloud nine after the most thrilling night of a mostly miserable season on Thursday, when Lyon were vanquished in the Europa League quarter-finals in the most dramatic of circumstances at Old Trafford.

After an initial pulsating 2-2 draw in France, the second leg was simply astonishing and featured a pair of two-goal comebacks, with United blowing a 2-0 half-time lead to be taken to extra time and then falling 4-2 behind to 10 men and looking to be heading out before three goals in seven minutes from Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire saw them win 5-4 on the night and 7-6 on aggregate.

A two-legged semi-final tie with Athletic Bilbao now awaits, as might the tantalising prospect of a potential showpiece showdown with Tottenham, with winning the Europa League now the full priority as United seek to return to the Champions League next season but currently sit down in 14th place in the top-flight and only three points above 17th.

Ruben Amorim’s side have won only three of their last 10 in the league in what is by far and away their worst season of the Premier League era, thrashed 4-1 by Carabao Cup winners Newcastle at St James’ Park last weekend to follow a drab Manchester derby stalemate against City and defeat at Nottingham Forest.

They now come up against a resurgent Wolves team under Amorim’s compatriot Vitor Pereira who are only two places and three points behind their opponents in 16th.

They are 14 above the cut-adrift bottom three with only six games remaining having banished any lingering relegation worries with an impressive five-match unbeaten run that began with a draw against Everton before four successive wins over Southampton, West Ham, Ipswich and Tottenham, the latter thumped 4-2 at Molineux.

Date, kick-off time and venue

Manchester United vs Wolves is scheduled for a 2pm BST kick-off on Sunday April 20, 2025.

The match will take place at Old Trafford in Manchester.

Manchester United vs Wolves team news

Amorim has admitted that he will have to take “risks” with his team selection against Wolves, with a number of injuries still lingering and no doubt a lot of tiredness in the squad - both physically and emotionally - after that extra-time epic against Lyon.

Changes are inevitable, with the manager not afraid to give more chances to youngsters but admitting it’s not ideal in the context of United’s struggles this season. Young striker Chido Obi - ineligible in the Europa League - is in line for more minutes up front during the run-in, with Harry Amass having started against Newcastle and then come off the bench on Thursday.

Plenty of rotation is expected throughout the team, with Noussair Mazraoui and Victor Lindelof available after both players had to leave Old Trafford early on Thursday night due to respective personal issues.

Amorim namechecked Diogo Dalot as one player who was feeling tired, while Joshua Zirkzee, Amad Diallo, Matthijs de Ligt, Lisandro Martinez, Ayden Heaven and Toby Collyer are all out and Jonny Evans likely to be short on match fitness after recently returning to training following a long-term injury.

Wolves’ recent surge has come despite a lengthy injury list of their own, with Pereira to make late decisions on Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, Matt Doherty and Pedro Lima.

Hwang Hee-chan is likely to miss out along with Sam Johnstone, while Sasa Kalajdzic, Yerson Mosquera, Enso Gonzalez and Leon Chiwome are all long-term absentees.

Manchester United vs Wolves prediction

It will be hard for Manchester United to quickly refocus on a long-since lost Premier League campaign after the sheer highs of Thursday night and one of the most incredible European games ever witnessed at Old Trafford.

Like fellow Europa League semi-finalists Tottenham, that competition is now their major priority with silverware and a crucial route back to the Champions League on offer for two clubs that have endured nightmare campaigns domestically.

United will no doubt be weakened by Amorim’s necessary changes and Wolves are in sublime form after winning four on the bounce.

It wouldn’t be any sort of shock to see them emerge victorious again here, but we think the much-changed hosts will do enough to claim a share of the spoils in another entertaining fixture.

Draw, 2-2.

Head to head (h2h) history and results

Hwang and Matheus Cunha were both on target for Wolves in a 2-0 victory over United at Molineux on Boxing Day - a match in which Bruno Fernandes was sent off for the third time this season.

The last meeting between these two sides at Old Trafford was an absolute classic in February 2024 as Mainoo popped up in the 97th minute to snatch a 4-3 victory after Wolves had fought back from both 2-0 and 3-1 down.
