Vivianne Miedema’s second goal in City’s 2-0 triumph over Chelsea in the first leg of our UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final has been shortlisted for Goal of the Week.
The Dutch international has been a prolific figure in the final third for City this season, bagging 10 goals in 16 appearances in all competitions.
And Wednesday evening was no different.
After taking to the Joie Stadium pitch after the interval, it became very apparent very quickly that the 28-year-old was looking to leave her mark on another Champions League fixture.
Miedema fired City ahead on the hour mark, nudging home Laia Aleixandri’s initial headed effort which rattled Hannah Hampton’s crossbar before flying straight to the City striker waiting patiently at the back post.
But it wasn’t that composed finish that has earned Miedema plaudits and a nomination for the Champions League Goal of the Week, it was her second and equally important strike.
Kerolin Nicoli drove goalbound, cutting inside slightly to edge towards the Chelsea box in the final few minutes.
And as she broke into the final 18 yards, Kerolin played a perfectly-weighted pass into the path of Miedema who met her Brazilian team-mate stride for stride as City countered.
The striker allowed the ball to roll across her before firing a first-time left-footed finish into the bottom left corner to send the thousands of City fans in attendance into a frenzy and move City within touching distance of qualifying for the final four.
Miedema’s goal has been nominated alongside Barcelona’s Scherternleib, Lyon’s Dumornay and Real Madrid’s Athenea.
