Mika Biereth (22) had a wealth of choice in March. Eligible to play for four different countries, the AS Monaco forward opted to represent Denmark, whom he had featured for at youth level. The striker has now evoked that choice in an interview with L’Équipe.
“I am in a unique situation. Not many are eligible to play for four countries,” said Biereth in a mixed zone interview attended by Get French Football News in early March, just before the striker was forced into making a definitive choice. Born in London, Biereth’s mother is Bosnian, whilst his father is half-German, half-Danish. He was therefore eligible to represent England, Denmark, Germany, and Bosnia.
At youth level, he had represented Denmark and he stayed loyal to the Scandinavian nation. “My dad is a very important person, not just in my life but also in my career,” began the Monaco forward in an interview with L’Équipe.
He added, “He has accompanied me at every stage. I chose to represent Denmark at the age of 14 or 15. For me, it was natural. Before the last international break, I spoke with all of the nations (England, Denmark, Germany, and Bosnia) out of respect. Having a link with so many countries is special. My decision won’t have made Jamal (Musiala, a close friend of Biereth’s from their time spent at Chelsea) happy but it is the one that made me happiest.”
Biereth appeared in both of Denmark’s UEFA Nations League appearances in March. He currently has 12 goals to his name in Ligue 1 after having made the move to Monaco from Sturm Graz during the January transfer window.
