Lamine Yamal stole the limelight in the recent Laureus World Sports event in Madrid, which was full of sporting personalities from across the globe.

The young attacking wizard won the prestigious Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year award for a sensational 2024.

Although he couldn’t be present at the ceremony due to Barça’s preparations for their league clash against Mallorca, Yamal was able to record a message, in which he thanked his family and the Barcelona coaching staff.

“I want to thank the Laureus Academy, it’s a great honour for me and my family. I can’t forget the technical staff of the national team and Barça,” he said.

The 17-year-old beat tough competition for the award, with nominees including Julen Alfred (athletics), Summer McIntosh (swimming), Letsile Tebogo (athletics), Victor Wembanyama (basketball), and Bayer Leverkusen (football).

This is indeed quite the accolade for a 17-year-old who is destined to win bigger things in football in the years to come.

For now, though, Yamal will be more worried about winning the Copa Del Rey, with Barcelona slated to take on Real Madrid in the final on April 26.

The forward, who has been one of Barcelona’s top chance creators this season, is likely to play a key role in helping his team break down the Real Madrid defence, which is devoid of confidence.

Yamal has already shone in the two Clasicos so far and will look to continue that momentum in the Copa Del Rey final this coming weekend.
