Walsall were knocked off the top of League Two for the first time in four months as Port Vale climbed above them with a 3-2 win at the Bescot Stadium.
Vale took the lead in the fourth minute when Lorent Tolaj’s overhead kick hit the post and ricocheted in off goalkeeper Sam Hornby.
Walsall responded quickly, with Taylor Allen scoring from the penalty spot to net for the third match in a row, before Levi Amantchi put them ahead just 11 minutes later.
The visitors equalised just before half-time when Ben Garrity hammered one home from a long throw.
Just before the break, Vale went back in front after Tolaj converted a penalty, awarded for a foul by Oisin McEntee.
In the second half, Vale held Walsall at bay and could have made it 4-2, but Sam Hornby produced a great save to tip Garrity’s volley over the bar.
With the win, Darren Moore’s team moved to the top of League Two, with Bradford having the chance to match them if they beat Crewe later.
