With a little over 24 hours left before Barcelona and Real Madrid face off in the finals of the Copa del Rey, there has been a significant development concerning the match.

The two behemoths of Spanish and European football are all set to square off at Estadio de La Cartuja in Seville on Saturday with the King’s Cup on the line.

Real Madrid seek change of referees

Ahead of the blockbuster clash, COPE reports that Real Madrid are demanding a change of referees for the game against Barcelona tomorrow.

Ricardo De Burgos Bengoetxea is the main referee for tomorrow’s encounter while Gonzalez Fuertes is set to be the main VAR official.

Earlier today, both referees appeared in front of the media for the customary press conference before the cup final.

As per the report, Real Madrid have been left stunned by the emotional breakdown of De Burgos Bengoetxea and now question whether De Burgos is in the right state of mind to handle a match of such magnitude.

Meanwhile, Gonzalez Fuertes’ comments concerning recent content broadcast by RMTV also made headlines.

As such, there is a belief within the Real Madrid offices that the referees might not be neutral heading into the finals tomorrow and as such are seeking that the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) replaces them.

The RFEF, for its part, has not acted in any way thus far and are waiting to see if Real Madrid do make a formal request to change the referees. If there is no movement from the Spanish capital club, nothing will happen.

Barcelona have already beaten Real Madrid twice this season, in convincing fashion, and will be hoping for a repeat tomorrow to win their second trophy under Hansi Flick.
