Joan Garcia has been one of the most standout performers in La Liga this season, shining bright in between the posts for an RCD Espanyol outfit that has managed to distance themselves from the relegation battle.

The 23-year-old’s performances have not gone unnoticed as a series of top clubs within Spain and across Europe have taken an interest in the shot-stopper, including Real Madrid.

Indeed, Los Blancos are believed to be big admirers of the Spanish custodian, who won the gold medal at the Paris Olympics last year.

Real Madrid enter race for Joan Garcia

Now, MARCA reports that Real Madrid and Aston Villa have now entered the race to sign Joan Garcia from RCD Espanyol in the summer.

Real Madrid had appeared confident in their current goalkeeping setup, but information shared by superagent Jorge Mendes during a meeting days ago – concerning interest from various clubs in signing Andriy Lunin – has raised concerns within the club’s management.

As such, they have now shown an interest in signing Garcia, who has a release clause worth €25 million in his contract with Espanyol, making it difficult for the Catalan club to retain him beyond this season.

In fact, at Valdebebas, they are already aware of Garcia’s willingness to share the dressing room with Thibaut Courtois and compete for a starting spot.

The goalkeeper is not intimidated by challenges and is known for his work ethic and drive – qualities he has consistently shown at Espanyol.

No shortage of suitors

As mentioned earlier though, Aston Villa are also keen on signing Garcia, as Emiliano Martinez has received a significant offer from Saudi Arabian football and could be on his way out.

Meanwhile, Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, has also expressed interest in the Spanish goalkeeper. However, the continued presence of Wojciech Szczesny and Marc-Andre ter Stegen could complicate any move to the Catalan side.

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal are another club in the race to sign him. While their interest is somewhat surprising due to the presence of David Raya, it is known that Arteta attempted to bring in the Olympic gold medallist as early as last summer.

If Luis de la Fuente calls him up to the Spain senior national team, Garcia’s release clause will increase by €5 million. Conversely, if Espanyol were to be relegated, a scenario now considered unlikely, it would decrease by €5 million.

Garcia’s agent, Juanma Lopez, is approaching the matter with patience. A decision will depend on the player, who must analyse the current offers and choose between the competing clubs.
