The part of the Roma hierarchy that would like a veteran to succeed Claudio Ranieri, including the current coach himself, is gaining the upper hand, and Maurizio Sarri would be a strong fit for the squad. The present boss’ influence is rapidly increasing, Leggo and La Gazzetta dello Sport’s journalist Francesco Balzani informs (via Marione).

The ex-Lazio manager isn’t at the top of the queue yet, but some choices hint in such a direction. For instance, Leandro Paredes’ renewal. The two were together at Empoli, and the gaffer has been trying to reunite with him ever since. Instead, the Argentine butted heads with Massimiliano Allegri at Juventus.

Sarri was already one step away from the Roma bench in the past. The front office had worked at length to hire him, then the owners superseded them and appointed José Mourinho out of the blue. Another coup de theatre is possible.

The veteran had a strong rapport with Paulo Dybala in Turin. La Joya was one of the only players he bonded with. He rates a few other contributors. He wouldn’t demand to overhaul the squad, as he likes it already, but only ask for a couple of signings.

Our Take on Roma and Sarri

If they can’t convince Ranieri to stay, which would be the best option regardless of how their season ends, and can get past the fact that he worked for Lazio, where his stint ended quite bitterly, he’d be a choice of continuity. The two playing styles aren’t far off despite the different schemes. He’s far from affable though, which can rub people and fan bases the wrong way, especially if the results aren’t great.
