Reece James scored his first England goal against Latvia on Monday night and was named man of the match after an impressive performance.

James was starting his first game for the Three Lions in two and a half years and marked the occasion by opening the scoring with a fantastic freekick.

Harry Kane and Eberechi Eze added second half goals to give England a comfortable 3-0 win and make it two wins from two for new boss Thomas Tuchel.

Shearer and Lineker agree on James

James was deployed in his natural right back position having been used in midfield by Enzo Maresca in recent weeks, and it’s easily his best position.

The freekick he scored was exceptional and showed the quality he possesses as he curled it round the wall, with Roy Keane likening him to England legend David Beckham.

Lee Dixon questioned why James didn’t celebrate, but there was no doubting his performance and both Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker were full of praise for James.

James scored a brilliant freekick against Latvia.

“One or two again positive performances. Reece James, I thought, looked really comfortable. He scored a fantastic goal,” Shearer told The Rest Is Football.

Lineker added:

“I did think both [Myles] Lewis-Skelly and Reece James performed really well.

“I did think both of them looked to pass forward and break the lines that way. They hit some really nice firm passes into the likes of [Jude] Bellingham, [Harry] Kane and [Morgan] Rogers.”

James has once again spent a large part of the season injured, but has got himself fit again in recent weeks and has now made more appearances than he managed in the entire of last season.

With Romeo Lavia fit again it’s likely James will revert to playing in his natural right back position with Chelsea facing a tough end to the season.

The Blues will need their captain fit and at his best to help them win the Conference League and qualify for Champions League football.
