Matty Godden celebrated notching the Addicks' winner with teammates on social media.
Matty Godden took to social media to celebrate netting Charlton Athletic’s winner against Northampton Town on Good Friday.
Despite taking an early lead thanks to a ninth-minute Luke Berry opener, Charlton were quickly pegged back by the Cobblers thanks to a Dara Costelloe equaliser from the spot just minutes later.
But Godden ensured the Addicks took all three points with a neat finish in the 71st minute, solidifying Charlton’s play-off place.
The 33-year-old and his Charlton teammates took to Instagram to mark the important win after the final whistle.
Posting images of his strike and celebration, Godden captioned the post: “A cracking GOOD FRIDAY @ The Valley ♥️.”
Winger Tennai Watson was one of the first in the replies, writing: “Some guy 🔥”
Fellow Charlton man Chuks Aneke, who provided the assist for Godden, knocking the ball on for him to chase, went with similar, saying: “The boy 😍”
They weren’t alone, with Conor Coventry, Karoy Anderson and Tyreece Campbell among those piling into the comments.
When a striker drops down a division in the twilight of their career, as Godden did last summer to join Charlton from Coventry City, teams can never be quite sure what they’re going to get; it’s not always as simple as them bagging a hatful of goals in a lower division.
However, with Godden, it has been.
He notched in only his second game for the Addicks, against Bolton Wanderers, back in August and has never looked back since.
The Canterbury-born forward is now on 15 goals in 38 League One appearances, undoubtedly a key reason behind Charlton’s promotion push.
And they’ve been crucial strikes. Just in recent weeks, Godden netted a game-defining brace against Wigan Athletic, a vital goal against Mansfield Town and now this winner against the Cobblers.
Without Godden’s goals, Charlton likely wouldn’t have taken the three points from those three encounters.
If Charlton do manage to sneak up via the play-offs this season, Godden will rightly take many of the plaudits.
His winner at the Valley on Friday guaranteed Charlton a play-off place when the regular campaign draws to a close, with Reading now unable to catch them 10 points adrift and only three games remaining.
Godden’s decisiveness will, of course, be needed for those crunch fixtures, but the importance of the final three fixtures must not be understated.
The Addicks are guaranteed to be in the play-offs, but they cannot take their foot off the gas and risk entering those knockout games in poor form.
The London-based side have a tough trio of games to see out the season, too. They face Wycombe Wanderers and Wrexham away, second and third respectively, before Burton Albion at home on the final day, who could still have third-tier survival on the line.
A win is not guaranteed in any of those match-ups, so Charlton, and Godden, must be on top form to ensure they aren’t heading into the play-offs rocked.
