Southampton have halted new contract negotiations with forward Paul Onuachu which might indicate his permanent summer transfer.
Everybody knows Southampton's interest in promoting fresh talent. After all, for a reason, despite being a relegation-threatened side, they boast one of the youngest Premier League squads.
But would you believe me if I say, the Saints have lately turned radical on this motive? This is indeed true, and for that, they will see the sales of some older players soon.
For instance, remember the club's reaction to hearing about a potential Ben Brereton Diaz sale. Or, their expectations of Adam Armstrong's loan move. To note, both fall above their regular lineup's average age.
Further, consider the situation of 31-year-old winger Ryan Fraser who has been completely sidelined from boss Ivan Juric's plans.
Still, if you aren't convinced, what the club is being touted to do next will surely confirm this.
As per Africa Foot reports(via Soccernet), Southampton has decided to halt forward Paul Onuachu's contract renewal talks for a while. Though he is only on their books till next season, the club wants to rethink his future.
Well, listening to this at first, must've shocked you. After all, how can Southampton be unsure of their in-form striker, who is now their Premier League joint-top scorer?
Still, it's what the reality is. And all this for promoting the notion of a younger core setup over older players.
But the question prevails if Southampton's approach is actually practical. After all, not many fans would have forgotten how their similar previous transfer strategy came to haunt them.
Now, if you ask me, the solution to Southampton's problem lies in a confined sweet spot of a mixture of the two. Ideally, while some experienced players must provide stability, an appreciable blend of the youngsters in this project is needed.
Notably, this is what the Saints haven't realized in recent years. Hopefully, the earlier they acknowledge it, the faster things improve.
