Southampton will be back in the Championship next year after a difficult return to the Premier League.

The Saints gained promotion in 2024, but have been unable to survive in the top flight, and are now even looking for a new manager to oversee their upcoming promotion push.

It remains to be seen who will be in charge when next season gets underway, and their potential summer transfer business likely won’t take shape until that appointment is made.

But there are certain moves Southampton can already get started on, as they prepare for life back in the second tier.

Southampton’s dream transfer window

When asked what a dream summer window would look like, FLW’s Southampton fan pundit Martin Sanders named Danny Rohl and Liam Rosenior as ideal managerial appointments following Ivan Juric's exit.

He believes a consistent goalscorer is a must, as well as bringing back Ronnie Edwards and Shea Charles into the first team squad and getting rid of the dead wood in the team.

“Perfect manager to start with, Danny Rohl or Liam Rosenior, that would be perfect,” Sanders told Football League World.

“And then to go and sign a 25-30-goal-a-season striker.

“I think to remove all the dead wood in the squad, to bring back Ronnie Edwards from QPR, he’s out on loan.

“To replace Ramsdale with a top goalkeeper, to keep hold of Shea Charles, to bring him back.

“Flynn Downes, keep hold of him, and to recruit really, really well, right across the squad.

“But the key is removing the dead wood.”

Southampton are bottom of the Premier League table, and have already had their relegation to the Championship confirmed.

Busy summer for next Southampton manager

Southampton have learned in emphatic terms that their squad simply isn’t good enough to compete in the Premier League.

That means they face an important summer ahead, with the first big move coming with the appointment of a new manager.

That manager will have their work cut out for them in building a team that can not only fight for promotion but could possibly even do better in the top flight than in this season.

These moves highlighted will all be the basis of a strong summer, and reintegrating the likes of Downes, Charles and Edwards should be an easy step towards improving the team.
