Southampton's last Premier League win against Crystal Palace dates back to May 2021. Notably, from that Saints squad, only Jack Stephens, Jan Bednarek, and Kyle Walker-Peters remain in the current roster.
Admit it or not, as avid Premier League fans, we always crave continuous action. In fact, amidst this transition from international football back to league action, you might've checked the FA Cup results.
But if you haven't, you should, especially as a Southampton fan. After all, the Saints face Crystal Palace next in the Premier League, and the Eagles just comfortably defeated Fulham.
Well, if that didn’t worry you, this next fact might. Southampton haven’t beaten Palace in the league for nearly four years.
For context, Southampton’s last victory over Palace came under Ralph Hasenhüttl. With the help of former club hero Danny Ings' brace, Southampton had mounted a brilliant 3-1 comeback after going down early in the fixture.
What's interesting further? From that winning lineup, only three players remain, Jack Stephens, Jan Bednarek, and Kyle Walker-Peters.
Naturally, it's easy to acknowledge a repeat of the fixture at St. Mary's would be a memorable one for the trio. But truth be told, significant chances are that of them, only Kyle Walker-Peters plays this time.
Talking about the two centre-backs, they have endured a season to forget in terms of their fitness. Earlier, Stephens had to be sidelined for multiple months and the Saints opted to hand over their leadership to Jan Bednarek.
Call it mere coincidence or misfortune but Stephens' fatigues also shifted towards the 28-year-old. Consequently, Bednarek's strong start to the year has been nullified by a constant string of injuries which has become an annoying theme at the club.
