His dream of playing in the home Champions League final with his beloved Bayern Munich not fulfilled, Thomas Müller spoke on his final UCL match with the Rekordmeister last night. The 35-year-old spoke to DAZN after a 2-2 draw with Inter Milan saw Bayern eliminated in the quarter-finals. Müller admitted aggravation that his Bundesliga outfit conceded twice from set-pieces in the span of three minutes, but otherwise sought to keep things positive.
“It was really clumsy how we conceded those two goals,” Müller said. “But we got into the game well and, like in previous instances, fought back to make it 2-2. If one of the chances at the end of the game, we could have been in a different position now.
“We were restless and erratic [during the phase in which Inter scored the two goals],” Müller continued. “Those were wasted minutes. But myself and the team performed well enough to look at ourselves [satisfied] in the mirror afterwards.
“I’m not feeling very emotional now,” Müller noted when asked how it would feel to never don a Bayern UCL jersey again. “I judge the games for myself. I gave everything, the team fought hard and gave everything.
“It’s probably more emotional for them [my teammates] than me,” Müller insisted. “I enjoy fighting. I did have the feeling that the lads were giving a little extra for me. When you give everything and the result doesn’t come, one has to accept the result.“
“The final would have been in Munich,” Müller concluded. “The connection to our FanKurve is very good, and the team really appreciates them. We tried everything, but the Champions League isn’t as easy as calling in a musical request to a radio station.”
