A domestic treble this campaign is entirely possible and within Celtic’s grasp. With the League Cup already in the bag, a healthy commanding l13 points lead at the top of the table, and only two games away from achieving Scottish cup success, it’s more than a realistic expectation that we will complete a clean sweep of honours.
It’s not over the line just yet of course, but we have put ourselves in a tremendous position to achieve what would be our sixth domestic treble in just under a decade, in what would be a truly remarkable accomplishment.
We completed our first ever domestic treble back in the historical campaign of 1966/67 which also seen us achieve the holy grail that is the European Cup, in a campaign we won every single competition we entered. All five of them as we won the Glasgow Cup too.
Two year later we achieved our second domestic clean sweep topped off by a thumping 4-0 victory over Rangers as we won the Scottish Cup to cement our domestic dominance.
We would have to wait a massive 32 years before we completed another domestic treble. That duly arrived on a sunny May afternoon in 2001 as Martin O’Neill’s side beat Hibs 3-0 to seal a clean sweep as we exerted ourselves as the best side in the country.
Fifteen later Brendan Rodgers arrived at the club amidst a blaze of publicity and huge expectations, and he duly delivered, winning a clean sweep in his first season in charge, and more impressively it was achieved entirely undefeated. The invincible treble.
Brendan led us to a second successive treble the following season, the first ever back to back treble completed by a Scottish club. He unfortunately left midway through the third campaign, but laid the foundations for a third consecutive treble, which Neil Lennon achieved after taking the reins. The Treble Treble.
Even the global pandemic that was Covid couldn’t stop us from completing a fourth successive clean sweep, an unprecedented quadruple treble, the only time that has happened in World football and not enough is said or written about such a remarkable achievement.
All good things must come to an end as they say, and that it did as we endured the unusual circumstances of ending a campaign without silverware in a strange era of football due to the effects of the covid pandemic.
Not to worry though, success was soon upon us once again as Ange Postecoglou revived our fortunes by winning five out of six trophies in two campaigns, including of course yet another treble, our fifth in seven seasons. Remarkable.
Treble specialist Brendan Rodgers returned, and he’s worked his magic yet again as we focus on yet another clean sweep. If we do indeed prevail it will be the ninth in our illustrious history, and our sixth in just shy of a decade. When you consider we had achieved only three by the start of this century, then it will herald a truly remarkable achievement.
